A respirator is a facemask that protects the nurse and client from respiratory disease transmission. Respirator mask fit testing is required before entering a practicum site. The test determines the type and size of facemask (respirator) that best protects the individual from airborne infection.
Most hospitals offer Respirator Mask Fit Testing through their Occupational Health and Safety department, and several companies offer this service. Students who follow specific cultural or religious practices that have implications related to respirator fit testing are invited to speak directly with their Program Coordinator.

Do not eat, drink, chew gum, or smoke for at least 30 minutes before your appointment.
Arrive on time and be clean-shaven in the area where the respirator seals against your face, if applicable.

Valid for 2 years, or sooner if there is a significant change in facial structure, such as substantial weight gain/loss, facial surgery, or other changes that may affect the respirator seal.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I use my Mask Fit test result from my workplace?
Answer: Yes, as long it is not expiring during your clinical practice.
Can I have a beard during the N95 Mask Fit Test?
Answer: No. A beard or facial hair that lies between the respirator and your skin may prevent the mask from creating an effective seal. Students should be clean-shaven in the areas where the respirator seals against the face unless an approved accommodation applies.
I keep a beard for religious reasons. What should I do?
Answer: Students who maintain facial hair for religious reasons may request a Religious Accommodation Waiver. Please contact the Clinical Placement Office as early as possible to obtain the required form and instructions.
Do I need to complete a Mask Fit Test if I already have one?
Answer: Yes, if your current Mask Fit Test has expired or does not meet the placement agency's requirements. Most Mask Fit Tests are valid for 2 years.
When do I need a new Mask Fit Test?
Answer: You should obtain a new Mask Fit Test if:
Your current test has expired.
You have experienced significant weight gain or weight loss.
You have had facial surgery or an injury affecting the shape of your face.
Your placement agency requires a different N95 respirator model or size.
My Mask Fit Test expires during the semester. Do I need to renew it?
Answer: Yes. Your N95 Mask Fit Test should remain valid throughout your clinical placement. We recommend renewing it at least 30–60 days before the expiry date or the clearance deadline.
