Tuberculosis (TB) spreads through the air by coughing, sneezing, or spitting. Symptoms include chronic cough with blood-tinged sputum, fever, night sweats, and weight loss.
Students must report any travel, living, or work history with TB risk.
Step 2 Mantoux test should be done 28 days after Step 1 (up to one year is acceptable).
BCG vaccination does not exempt students from Mantoux testing.
Mantoux testing must be done 4–6 weeks after any live vaccine.
Delivery:
In-person testing (Family Physician office, Seneca Health Centre, Walk-in clinic)
Instruction:
HCP will administer the test and instruction.
HCP will provide you with the report or write the result on your CPP Form.
Average time of completion: two-step test (1 to 4 weeks), one-step test (<1 week)
Validity period: Standard 1 year (6 months for PNC220/520, PSW, TNC)
Document/s required for clearance review: CPP Form page 3, Blood Work Report and/or Immunization Card or Vaccine Receipt
Renewal Time:
If a student has a documented two-step test, two-step test NEVER needs to be repeated.
Two-step testing (initial) is done prior to first clinical placement, and it must be done annually if test result is negative.
Test Results:
NEGATIVE. Then, 1 step testing will be done annually.
POSITIVE TEST! You will need two things:
1. Chest x-rays every 2 years. You will need the copy of your Chest x-ray report (not the film).
2. A letter from your physician annually. The letter from the health care provider is not the same as the Chest x-ray report. It needs to be said that the student is free and clear of symptoms of TB.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I have to take another 2-step TB skin test I have done it in the past?
A two-step Tuberculin Skin Test is required only once in your lifetime if properly performed and documented. If you have a documented history of a negative TB Skin Test, then you MUST do a 1-step TB Skin Test.
